Mandate
Groundwater Productions sees performance as an act of collaboration – between artists, art forms, and audience members. Through poetic language, innovative use of space and multi-disciplinary collaboration, Groundwater re-examines archetypal images and characters to tell age-old stories with a fresh voice. Whether through the creation of new work, the adaptation of ancient stories or the production of politically and socially imperative works by international playwrights, Groundwater Productions seeks to engage its audiences in a vibrant, visceral and necessary theatrical experience.
Groundwater Productions was founded in 2006 by Erin Shields and Gideon Arthurs. In 2015, long-time collaborator Andrea Donaldson joined the company as co-Artistic Director with Erin Shields. Groundwater has produced plays at Tarragon Theatre, Theatre Passe Muraille, The SummerWorks Festival, The Toronto Fringe Festival, The Rhubarb Festival, The Uno Festival and FemFest. Groundwater has been nominated for numerous awards and won two Dora Mavor Moore Awards and two SummerWorks Awards.
