The potent story, based on Christina Rossetti’s proto-feminist poem, of two sisters beckoned to indulge in the sumptuous fruits of the Goblin Market. While Lizzie resists, Laura submits to temptation only to find herself addicted to the fabled magic of the forest. Unable to watch her sister suffer, Lizzie offers the ultimate sacrifice to bring her back to her senses. At once violent and tender, as much cautionary tale as children’s fable, a modern declaration of female empowerment dressed in Victorian language, Goblin Market takes us into a mystical realm full of Christian allegory and erotic power.
Truly multi-disciplinary in its approach, Goblin Market brings together music, dance, verse and visual art to explore this dynamic piece. Explored through these media, the piece becomes a fully sensory experience that allows the audience to see, smell, hear, feel and even taste the mythical world of the Goblin Market.
(4 stars) “Goblin market is one hour of unadulterated theatrical bliss.”
- Paula Citron, Globe and Mail
“The closeness of the actors as they dash by or light a candle right near you is indescribable. So effectively have they marked out the space that you’ll swear you see paths and hills once the women have trod the floors a few times.”
- Glenn Sumi, Now Magazine
